Appearance: There is no specifically described look; it’s assumed to have a dark amber-amarant brown tint typical of mature rums aged with solera.
Aroma: As usual with Dictador, the nose opens with a good cup of coffee. The aromas don’t stop there: the coffee is flavored with vanilla and sweetened with a good spoonful of molasses. Black molasses has a special role in the clear taste of sweet licorice, and here it really is sweet licorice. The nose is fairly dry, with walnuts, pecans, and almonds trapped in a hard caramel—like a slab of crisp nougat. With aeration, the sweet licorice goes on, washed over with tobacco and coffee smoke. The caramelized nuts (pecans) remain present and form a dusty blend of spices.
Palate: On the palate, a small sweet bubble of yellow fruit first bursts and spills out. This sweetness offsets the dark side we had on the nose, and it translates here into a peppery, even spicy sharpness. Next come brown and salty caramel, plenty of coffee, and a spicy woodiness, where coriander brings a touch of freshness and imagination. The dark, deep impression is rounded out by molasses and sweet licorice.
Finish: The final notes that linger on the taste buds are dry and caramelized nuts, and maple syrup.
