It would be hard to pinpoint the century in which the Ščurek family first took up viticulture, but it is recorded that Stojan's grandfather Franc tended 1 hectare of vines and produced 50 hectolitres of wine. Today Stojan, with the help of his five sons, tends 20 hectares of vineyards, and the harvest is scaled accordingly. Most of the estate lies in the Italian part of Brda, with Grotišče, Dugo, Mahober, Jazbine, Jordano, Gredič and Kozlink regarded as the finest sites. The Ščurek family brings up to 80,000 bottles of superior wine to market each year. They remain true to wines that are fresh yet full-bodied, which is why they wait long into spring before the first racking. Such wines need a good deal of time to open up in the glass, but once they do, they are hard to put down. Alongside the most modern technology, they continue to uncover the secrets of oak barrels, and above all, they never forget the native varieties. They are especially proud of their blends: the red and white Stara brajda, UP and Kontra.
